A Nature Meditation
Bringing you closer to the environment in which we evolved for some seven million years, a nature meditation also brings you closer to human nature. You can enjoy this meditation from your office or living room, sit in the park, or hike into the mountains. All you need is a view of a tree.
And if you don't have a green view, you can look at a photo or a painting of nature. Here's a few reminders before we begin... - Preferably don't eat within an hour of your meditation because a stuffed stomach tends to prevent a relaxed mind and body.
- Back straight, head up.
- When thoughts distract,
remain mindful
of them.
- No expectations and don't worry about doing it right. You are doing it. That's all that matters.
- There's nothing magical about relaxing and meditating. It's just natural.
- You may set a 10 minute timer.
Here's our
disclaimer.
Now let's start our nature meditation... You are observing a tree. Just look at it. There might be wind, but the tree hardly moves. You can see its trunk, yet its roots are buried deep beneath you. It grows out of the ground, out of dirt, yet its trunk is tall, its crown is green, kissing the sun. You breathe out -- the tree breathes in the air you give it. When the tree breathes, you breathe in the oxygen that it gives you. You breathe together. Feel how the tree colors your thoughts, influences your mind. Close your eyes and observe your thoughts for a minute or so. Now focus on the tree. Imagine its roots, buried in the same soil as millions of other trees -- drinking, receiving nourishment from one ground which this tree shares with so many others. Breathe s-l-o-w-l-y, breathe together... Now trace its trunk from bottom to top, up to its green crown. Then look across the sky... It is full of oxygen from trees like this one, supporting you and so many other human beings and animals. And if the Sun is up, look at it and know that we all depend on each other as life on Earth depends on the Sun. The tree, you, billions like you, the Earth, the Sun... All part of one spectacular system. It is too big to contain, impossible to control. And that is fine, it is how nature works. Let it be. Now close your eyes for a minute and just feel your nature, feel your awareness of the whole and undivided life all around you and within you. Become mindful and observe any thought, sensation, scent, feeling -- as if it were the most natural part of your experience of life. Accept any part, follow no part in particular, just allow everything to exist and live and be a part of you. Just breathe. Observe how a nature meditation becomes a part of your human nature in your thoughts and feelings. Breathe with nature, breathe with a thousand generations of men and women before you. Just relax and breathe.
