Primordial Sound Meditation ''Facts Vs. Fiction...''
Primordial sound meditation (PSM) is so called because the sound is said to be the vibration the universe made at the time of its creation. Hence the prefix: Primordial.
And meditation means awareness. So this meditation technique translates into ... sound awareness. In reality,
this is pure mantra meditation.
But it's performed in accordance to ancient Vedic traditions. I don't like to criticize, but obviously no one really knows what Primordial Sound really sounds like (if there even was a sound).
Deepak Chopra,
through his Website, offers this meditation technique. According to their site, the practitioner receives a personal mantra according to the sound the universe made on the specific time and place of his/her birth. That sounds pretty specific... Actually,
isn't Om/Aum supposed to be the one universal sound?
Well well, different interpreters, different stories. Anyway... PSM is just a different name and a slightly more fancy mantra selection process than what's used in the technique popularized by Chopra's mentor,
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi
(the founder of
Transcendental Meditation (TM)
).
However, there should be absolutely nothing mystical about mantras (sounds, words, phrases - any specific point of focus).
So stay in control by choosing a personal, natural mantra.
And if you have already spent thousands of dollars on TM or PSM, don't get upset at me for being knowledgeable. And for telling the truth for free...
