Reading and Meditation

I am a university student. I always like to read and in the past concentration was never a problem for me. But a few weeks ago I realized that I can't concentrate as well as before. I checked about it with a friend who is studying psychology. He figured that I was just losing my focus and my mind was being distracted easily. He suggested that I try doing some meditation. My friend was right. I am already seeing good results.
I found that in the beginning it was a bit challenging to just empty your mind and not think about my assignments or what I will make for supper. It was sometimes difficult for me to keep my mind from wandering off. To keep me focused, I like to have meditation music in the background. I also find that it's easier to meditate at night. That's when my surroundings are quieter.
I love the sound of waterfalls. My thoughts drift away from me without making any conscious effort. When I first started meditating, without the help of any music, it was hard to sit still for five minutes. Music makes it easier and the time goes faster. I now feel comfortable sitting for long periods of time.
I am learning meditation on my own, without taking any classes. I surf for tips on the Net and find them on websites like yours. Then I try out the tips. It's a fun way to learn. I pick what I think will work for me.
From my personal experience, I can honestly say that meditation is a must for people who are dealing with a lack of concentration, stress, anger, fear, etc. in their life. I always found reading was relaxing. Now I am enjoying it even more. It's funny how one thing can lead to another and bring even more happiness.
